Braincage originally formed in the fall of 1993, when guitarist Jack Bos and, then singer, John Unruh began writing and rehearsing songs.  Bassist and current lead vocalist Chris Yonkman along with former drummer Josh Gritters soon joined them.  This original lineup laid the foundation for future braincage endeavors, but gave way to bigger and better things.

By the spring of 1994, drummer Mike Roberts replaced Gritters, and by 1997, Unruh also departed, leaving the next incarnation of braincage - Jack Bos on guitar, Chris Yonkman on bass and vocals, and Mike Roberts on drums.  While keeping the conception of the original braincage lineup, the solidified trio reworked old songs and wrote powerful new additions to the braincage repertoire.  In January of 2000, Mike Roberts announced that he would be leaving the band to pursue his studies full time.  Roberts was quickly replaced by another Gritters.  This time it was Lynwood native Matt Gritters.  The current trio is rehearsing and is very excited to be playing out.

Guitarist Jack Bos, 29, is a Palos Heights native with great song writing ability.  His guitar riffs are memorable and his solos are almost hum-able.  Bassist Chris Yonkman, 28, now resides in Northwest Indiana after attending college in Illinois.  He also contributes to much of the song writing, including lyrics.  Drummer Matt Gritters, 26, is a busy, aggressive drummer with a good work ethic.  The band's geographically spread out residences provide a very diverse fan base.

Braincage cites such influences as current acts Tool, Alice in Chains, and Godsmack, as well as some old-school metal acts, but they have a sound all their own and have recently released their first demo as a trio.  The self-titled demo features five braincage original songs, including the trademark "Devils and Glass Angels," and the newest addition, "Mind's Eye."

Braincage has been playing out with a vengeance since the summer of 1998, trying to gain some recognition.  With the resurgence of heavy metal music recently, the band has high hopes of making a name for themselves.  Finding venues has sometimes been a difficulty, but wherever hard-hitting stuff is heard, braincage tries to be there.  Braincage has played such venues as Champ's, Sluggers, JD Batt's, JJ Kelley's, The Matrix, and Smiler Coogan's and hopes to soon venture further into the city.

Braincage fans have proved themselves to be very loyal, with a solid showing at a recent battle of the bands.  Braincage always aims to please in their live shows.  It is a high-energy show with a lot of onstage movement and activity that the crowd really gets into.  But don't believe me?  Go see them for yourself.
